Grand Ole Opry celebrates 40 years

Posted: Updated:
NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

The Grand Ole Opry House is celebrating 40 years of music this weekend.

In 1974 there was only standing room on opening night, even for the president. Richard Nixon was the only U.S. president to attend the Opry -- or perform. He's remembered even more for the impromptu yo-yo lesson he received on-stage from Roy Acuff. The Nashville Yo-Yo Club came out to the Opry Plaza this weekend in remembrance of it.

The weekend celebration began early Saturday morning with a 5K, and continued throughout the day with yo-yos, book signings, and the chance to see some of the Opry's most famous names that have been there from the beginning.

Saturday night's celebration ended with an anniversary show with all the big names in attendance.

This weekend's events will lead into next year's celebration, which will mark 90 year since the Opry was founded.
