Man accused of driving drunk, killing infant has long rap sheet

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Avani Ingram had just turned 5-months-old when she lost her life Friday.

"The lady was hysterical, she didn't know what to do," the mother of one of the other crash victim's told us.

A car slammed into Avani's mother's van. Five children were inside including Avani's twin sister, who was critically injured and three teens including LaTonya Woodiest's 14-year-old daughter.

"They was all terrified," she recalled. "Everybody was hysterical. My daughter was hollering, saying, help her. She was worried more about her best friend than herself," Woodiest said.

Police say James O'Bannon was drunk when he ran the stop sign. He had no insurance or a license which was suspended for DUI. His rap sheet includes aggravated  assault, theft, arson and 11 other charges for drinking in public since 2001, among others.

"The ground's right here. You can see that it's saturated with glass, bottles that's been broken up," Pastor Antwan Cosby showed WAVE 3 News.

Neighbors say they've complained about O'Bannon and others drinking near the intersection where the crash happened. They have started a petition to put a stop to drunk driving.

Pastor Cosby says it's enough.

"We as a community have failed to make it a safer environment for our children," he said.

O'Bannon's friends told us he should have known he was too drunk to drive.

"He's a good guy. If he could take it back, he'd take it back," O'Bannon's friend said.

Avani's twin sister is improving and is now listed in fair and stable condition.
