Sheriff: Juvenile inmate overpowers, chokes, tries to shoot jailer while being moved

NELSON COUNTY, KY (WAVE) - A juvenile being transported from the Spencer County Jail to a facility in Elizabethtown Wednesday slipped out of his restraints, choked and disarmed the jailer who was driving, and tried to shoot both the jailer and a truck driver who stopped to help, according to the Nelson County Sheriff's Department.

A news release issued Friday says Spencer County Jailer Darrell Herndon was traveling west on the Bluegrass Parkway around 4:35 Wednesday afternoon when a juvenile he was driving to Lincoln Village Detention Center in Elizabethtown got through the safety screen between the two of them and started choking Herndon from behind.

Herndon was able to pull over around the 15 mile marker in Nelson County. A truck driver headed in the opposite direction stopped and came to Herndon's aid.

As the truck driver approached the driver's side of the cruiser, Herndon started to exit the car, and while doing so, the juvenile managed to disarm him, the news release states. The juvenile pointed the firearm at both men and threatened to kill them.

Because the juvenile was unfamiliar with the firearm, he was unable to fire it, although he tried to several times, according to the Nelson County Sheriff's Department. The truck driver made contact with the juvenile, and, after a brief struggle, gained control of the weapon.

Herndon, with the help of the truck driver, was able to regain custody of the juvenile just as Nelson County law enforcement officers arrived on the scene.

Additional criminal charges against the juvenile are pending. It was not immediately clear why he had been arrested initially.
