HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Huntsville City Council members opened up Thursday night about the state of the city's school system and its leadership.

While opinions made at the meeting were mixed, one thing everyone agreed on is that change is needed.

Nearly every community member who took the podium had concerns with leadership, communication and diversity at Huntsville City Schools. Council members echoed with similar concerns.

John Olshefski pointed to the numbers, saying Huntsville City Schools are better academically than they were two years ago. But Richard Showers had his own views about ‘numbers,' saying the number of African-American students and white students in the schools is still imbalanced.

Will Culver agreed. "We have an issue with our school system; it's blatantly clear," he said. "There is no diversity, or should I say, not much diversity in North and West Huntsville."

Culver also called for action, saying we need to focus on solutions instead of the problems themselves. But that takes communication, something Showers said is lacking.

"I have reached a conclusion that something has to be done to let this school board and this superintendent understand that the intimidation, disrespect of its citizens, teachers, public officials… is unacceptable for this great city," said Showers.

Showers suggested withholding funding that funnels from the council to the school system until it is determined that the board is respectful and transparent in its actions.

Nothing of that nature was voted on or discussed further. Council President Mark Russell said there is a meeting in the works for the council to sit down with the board and discuss issues.
