MARSHALL COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

An American hero and Alabama native died Wednesday.

Retired US Army Colonel Ola Lee Mize was a Marshall County native and was a key figure in the defense of "Outpost Harry" when it was attacked during the Korean War. His actions there earned him the Medal of Honor.

Among the many condolences that came following news of Mize's death was from Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions. In a statement, he said, "Colonel Mize bravely protected injured comrades and held opposition forces at bay, valiantly risking his own life for others… Alabama has lost a true hero and his legend will grow. He was a remarkable man whose courage on the battlefield extended to a determination to do the right thing in all aspects of life."

Colonel Mize's Medal of Honor remains on display in the Guntersville Museum.

He was 82 years old.
