2 carriers show interest in Shoals airport

MUSCLE SHOALS, AL (WAFF) -

An airport in the Shoals could soon have anew commercial carrier, after it was confirmed Thursday that at least twoproviders are interested in coming to the region.

Airport officials said the Northwest RegionalAirport has been plagued with cancellations and delays with their currentprovider, putting them in jeopardy of losingtheir status with the Essential Air Service program. But there may be hopefor the future.

Muscle Shoals Mayor David Bradford said agroup of local leaders spent the day in St. Louis, visiting with staff at AirChoice One, just one of two programs to show interest in providing servicethrough the EAS in the Shoals.

Mayor Bradford said the airport plans tostart the re-bidding process for a carrier next month. He said it is unclear ifcurrent provider Silver Airways will submit another bid; their contract is setto end in September. He said airport officials are in the process of setting upa meeting with another service based out of Massachusetts.

In February, officials worried the Departmentof Transportation would send them a letter of non-compliance with the EASprogram. At this time, local leaders said they have not received anynotifications.
