DEKALB COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

One man suffered life-threatening injuries after a shooting in DeKalb County.

It happened at a home in the Whiton community following an altercation.

Investigators said 60-year-old Randy Hill was at his son's residence tending to chickens when he was approached by another man who was looking for the son.

According to Sheriff Jimmy Harris, the man, later identified as 60-year-old Tony Kitchens, said he was there to "whoop" Hill's son. During the exchange, the sheriff said Kitchens hit Hill several times with a flashlight. Hill was able to obtain a shotgun from the residence and shot at his attacker, striking Kitchens in the leg.

"He was able to get a shotgun that was propped up in a corner and he backed up with it; told the guy with the flashlight 'you need to stop,' and he continued to come on," said Harris.

Kitchens' record shows he was a member of national motorcycle gang "Devil's Disciples" and faced charges in 2012 for lying to a federal grand jury about the receipt and sale of a pound of methamphetamine in Michigan.

Charges have not been filed at this time. Investigators are now trying to determine what the argument with Hill's son was about.

"We don't encourage anybody to shoot anybody if they can retreat far enough," said Sheriff Harris. "But you know, when somebody's beating you in the head with a flashlight, you know, you've got to protect yourself."

Hill was taken to Marshall Medical Center for treatment of his injuries and was later released. Kitchens was flown to Huntsville Hospital, where his condition is currently unknown.
