Attorney for Vanderbilt rape suspect faces second criminal charge

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

The Channel 4 I-Team has confirmed attorney Fletcher Long will face a new criminal charge, his second in just the last four months.

Long, who is on the legal team for Vanderbilt rape suspect Brandon Vandenburg, was indicted on a charge of extortion last week by a Montgomery County grand jury.

Sources say a warrant for Long will likely be issued Wednesday, and he could turn himself in then.

The extortion indictment is separate from the harassment charge issued to Long in December 2013.

The Channel 4 I-Team has confirmed Long and his former partner Carrie Gasaway were indicted on the extortion charge stemming from a dispute with their former client Michelle Langlois.

Sources say that dispute ultimately resulted in the TBI raiding Long and Gasaway's former law firm in 2011.

Long's former office manager, Christie Hill, who filed the harassment charge against Long, said she witnessed the TBI sweep the office.

"TBI stayed well into the night, took boxes, files, computers," Hill said.

Our calls to Long and his attorney were not returned, but when the Channel 4 I-Team first reported on the raid, Long's current law partner, John Herbison, said Long was not the target of that investigation.

According to evidence sources tell the Channel 4 I-Team was submitted to the grand jury, both Long and Gasaway took out a theft of services charge against Langlois, who was their client in 2010, and had her arrested.

According to the offense report, Long and Gasaway claimed Langlois paid with a bad check for $50,000.

That charge, according to Langlois' former attorney, was ultimately dropped.

Langlois referred all our questions to the district attorney but confirmed that she felt Long and Gasaway went to extreme lengths to get the money.

Emails obtained by a source between Langlois and Long and Gasaway's former firm show contentious exchanges.

At one point, Langlois questions the cost, writing that other attorneys told her the amount was not ethical for a probate case.

An email sent to Langlois from the firm reads in part, "While we really don't feel like you are in much of a position to negotiate, we will accept $7,000 as a full settlement [...] in the event the check is not good, you will only receive more criminal charges."

As for if this pending charge will have any impact on his representation of Vandenburg, Long did not return our call for comment. But when Long was arrested for harassment in December, Long said his fellow attorneys had confidence in his ability to perform the job.

A spokeswoman for Gasaway said it would be inappropriate to comment on a sealed indictment.

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
