PAINT ROCK, AL (WAFF) -

The town of Paint Rock in Jackson County is a few days away from no longer having a police presence. The chief and another officer resign their posts late Tuesday night.

Their departures will leave one remaining part-time officer, and he is not scheduled to work between Saturday and Monday.

Chief Billy Wilson gave notice two weeks ago. Wilson and another officer resigned, saying the working relationship between the police and the mayor had deteriorated after the mayor's son was twice arrested by the department.

Townspeople came out in numbers for the meeting two weeks ago when the council voted to disband the municipal court. Some residents are concerned the police department will be the next thing to go.

The interim chief said he has requested more officers be hired, but warned they will not have anyone on duty for the coming weekend. "They'll have to call the sheriff's department and count on them, depend on them to cover them," said Interim Chief Robert Kirk. "[Remaining officer] Chuck Philips does an excellent job. I believe Chuck will do the best he can with what he's got. He's limited to his resources."

Kirk said he was told no more officers could be hired until after the council meets on March 18.

Dennis Cobb is preparing to open an antique store across the street from City Hall in May. The lack of a 24/7 police presence concerns him. "I'm worried about someone breaking in our store if there's not going to be a cop here," he said."

Attempts to reach Mayor Jane Nevels for comment on this story were unsuccessful.
