The very standards cited for significantgains in reading and math, and improving the state's graduation rates are injeopardy.

Wednesday, a Senate Committee willvote on SB443, regulating Alabama's Common Core Standards.  The bill, sponsored by Senator Scott Beason, would place a moratorium on Alabama'sCollege and Career Ready Standards and allow local districts to opt out of anyportion of the current standards, or revert to the former standards.

SB443 would also usurp the powerof the State School board, reportedly transferring the power to the locallevel.  Ironically, State Superintendent,Dr. Tommy Bice says common core standards give teachers the power, allowingschool districts and educators to set curriculum to best suit their students,"It's not a one size fits all scenario".

Senator Beason, one of many lawmakers whohave sought to reverse common core since its implantation 3 years ago says hewould like to have a total repeal, "(and) end this educational experiment weare putting our children through".

Tuesday's public hearing regardingSB443 was packed with educators, parents and students who sounded off for twohours, for and against the legislation. No public school teacher spoke insupport of SB443, equally as telling, the Business Council of Alabamapublicly opposed the legislation.

Elmore County Superintendent, Dr.Jeff Langham, testified before the committee, armed with letters from parentsand teachers who support common core and a resolution passed by the ElmoreCounty School Board, opposing SB443. Langham said he is perplexed by themotivation behind this bill, knowing the benefits of common core.

"Don't use a political firestorm as an excuseto rob children of educational opportunities," Langham said.
