Project Prom gives away hundreds of free prom dresses to Columbus area teens

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Over a hundred young ladies in the Columbus area now have gorgeous dresses to wear to prom, and they didn't have to spend a penny.

The 4th annual Project Prom event took place this morning from 8 a.m. to noon. The Junior League of Columbus and their partners have been working for months to make sure that every girl in the area that wants to go to prom would have a beautiful dress to wear whether they can afford one or not. All they had to do was provide a student ID, and they could take home the prom dress, shoes and accessories of their choice.

"We had a huge line by 7 o'clock this morning," said Ginny Lawrence, President Elect of the Junior League of Columbus. "The girls are just going out with these great dresses, and some good knowledge about dating, and they're having so much fun. And I'm pretty sure the volunteers are having as much fun as the girls."

Throughout the event, an organization called Right From the Start gave classes on the topic of "how to avoid falling for a jerk."

The dresses were all donated by Columbus area residents and businesses. Lawrence says this year, community members donated over 800 dresses for the event, and many of them were brand new with the tags still hanging.

    Saturday, March 25 2017 5:50 PM EDT2017-03-25 21:50:37 GMT

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
