HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The Huntsville Police Department announced Friday that it received a grant to crack down on impaired driving. The campaign that began in March and would continue through September was organized by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and regionally administered by the North Alabama Traffic  Safety Office.

Sergeant Michael Johnson, the supervisor of HPD's DUI Task Force, stated, "The mission of the Department's DUI Task Force is to enforce the law, and to educate the public on the dangers of drinking and driving." The DUI Task Force was the number one ranked DUI enforcement squad in Alabama for over 15 years.

The DUI Task Force set up high visibility saturation patrols and safety checkpoints throughout Huntsville. Interstate 565, Memorial Parkway, Drake Avenue, Jordan Lane, University Drive, Bob Wallace Avenue, Bailey Cove Road, Andrew Jackson Way, Sparkman Drive, Pulaski Pike, and Cecil Ashburn Drive were listed as areas that will see enforcement activities, but would not be limited to just those.
