A judge must now decide how to proceed in the case of a former DeKalb County State Senator and a former staffer charged with felony ethics charges.

Barron is accused of illegally using campaign funds in the 2012 election.

Barron subpoenaed Attorney General Luther Strange to testify in his trial but Strange said his testimony isn't needed.

The court lasted for about an hour and a half Friday as the judge heard arguments on different motions. Attorneys made their final preparations for trial set for next month.

Prosecutors claimed Barron illegally gave Jill Johnson three checks totaling nearly $60-thousand along with transferring the title of a vehicle.

Questions were raised if Johnson's statements should be allowed or should be tried separately. The State also asked the judge to keep the defense from bringing in good character testimony relating to Barron. The parties estimated it could take approximately 100 prospective jurors to pick a jury.

Parties also argued over whether the Attorney General should be forced to testify. The judge is going to take the measure under advisement and rule later. However, it didn't stop the defense from issuing a subpoena. The Assistant Attorney General told the court he was served this morning and requested if the Attorney General is required to testify, that he be given 72 hours notice.

During the arguments made during the trial by Barron's Attorney, Joe Espy told the court that the Attorney General had done the very same thing, and that paying people bonuses or what they're worth was common and a customary practice.

Both sides estimated the trial would take around 10 days. The trial was scheduled for April 14.
