PISGAH, AL (WAFF) -

The Jackson County Commission is considering a request by the school board to close a road that runs next to a school. The road at issue is County Road 61 in Pisgah.

Public hearings are being held about the issue. The commission said they were told the reason for closure is for school safety. The school system requests the closure of the road from Boggus Drive to Thompson Street.

The board's request was met by opposition from those who say there have never been any safety issues and that there may be an ulterior motive.

People who oppose the closing said they want the kids to be safe too, but other things could be done instead of just closing the road. They counter that County Road 61 is a main road that should stay open. Some opponents said they use the road daily, but those for the change, for the most part, do not live in Pisgah.

"Many of them work here on a daily basis, but they don't live in the community," said Kathy Woodfin, in opposition of the closure. "People in this community have one center and that's it. That is the community – Lucky's, Dollar General, post office, service station, and the banks."

Woodfin went to school there for twelve years and worked as a teacher for nearly 30 before retiring. She says she's all about school safety, but other alternatives should be considered first.

Attempts to reach school superintendent Kenneth Harding for comment were unsuccessful. The commission is expected to discuss the issue at their next work session on March 17.
