JACKSON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Jackson County is in the middle of building the largest number of community storm shelters in the state. In fact, the county judge approved putting out bids for the final two shelters.

The county's plans include 28 sites across the county totaling 41 shelters, a handful of which are now finished. Three locations in Stevenson, two in Bridgeport and one community shelter in Section is complete and ready for use.

Emergency Management Agency officials said the county commission approved the bidding process Monday for the remaining two shelters, which will be placed at the county parks in Paint Rock Valley and North Sand Mountain.

EMA director Mike Ashburn said all other sites have been approved and are awaiting construction. He hopes people realize they can be a lifesaver. "The importance, I think for this county, is very high. I think that is something that the citizens of the county are very proud to get and I'm proud," he said.

County schools are also receiving shelters. Facilities at Section High School are near completion, as are shelters at Stevenon and Bryant Elementary, Stevenson Middle, and the Tech School. Shelters have yet to be built at 13 other schools, but EMA officials urge parents to be patient, as typically schools involve more paperwork.

Shelters in Paint Rock and four other locations could be completed by April 27.
