Florence investigators said a woman is accused of stealing money from a disabled person.

Sharon Chrisman is accused of stealing more than $1,000 from the man and creating a scheme to use the man to cash stolen checks on her behalf. A background check on Chrisman finds a lengthy criminal history dating back nearly ten years.

According to court documents, Chrisman pleaded guilty to attempted Medicaid fraud in 2005. She has also been in and out of jail on drug-related arrests.

Chrisman was charged with theft in Franklin County back in 2008. According to our findings, those charges were dismissed with conditions, but the details of those conditions are unknown at this time.

A call has been placed to Franklin County District Attorney Joey Rushing and Lauderdale County District Attorney Chris Connolly to learn more about Chrisman's criminal past and what these new charges mean for her.

Investigators encourage family members to take steps to prevent their loved ones from falling victim to these types of crimes. They said stealing from someone considered to be a protected person is a felony, and those responsible should be held accountable.

Jan Sheppard has been with Hospice of the Shoals for seven years. She said she understands families' needs when it comes to providing long-term care. Sheppard encourages families to do research before hiring someone to come into your home. She said use organizations like Hospice of the Shoals to help with placements and finding financial assistance, and to use certified agencies over individual sitters.
