HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

NASA Administrator Charlie Bolden rolled out the details for the money the space agency hopes to work with next year.

This year, the Marshall Space Flight Center's budget was a little over $2 billion, which has kept us on track with our role in NASA's Space Launch Systems production.

Bolden announced Tuesday the budget for next year includes $17.5 billion across the agency, with $2.15 allocated to Marshall Space Flight Center.

Specifically, the budget includes $1.4 billion for the Space Launch System (SLS), the rocket that will fly to an asteroid and eventually on to Mars. $193 million is allotted for space operations, which includes research on the International Space Station, directed in the Payload Ops Center at Marshall.

This year's budget totaled over $17 billion. At the NASA's Small Business Alliance Meeting in Huntsville last week, Marshall Space Flight Center Director Patrick Scheuermann said the agency didn't predict any major funding changes between this year and next.

Scheuermann said Tuesday there were no surprises in the new budget. In tough economic times, the center is doing more with less, and he considers the center in "great shape."

The Marshall budget includes earthly needs as well. The center's director hopes to see $550 million to revitalize the center with a new office complex and additional money for refurbishments to make the facility greener.
