Audit prompts federal investigation of Huntsville aviation unit

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A federal investigation is targeting aHuntsville aviation office with ties to Russia.

Reports said federal agents want to find outwhy the Army's Rotary Wing aircraft office in Huntsville kept awardingcontracts to a Russian company that cost taxpayers tens of millions of dollars.

Anaudit by the Inspector General prompted the investigation, after findingtwo Russian subcontractors hired to overhaul MI-17 helicopters failed to meetdeadlines to finish the job and drove up the price of aircraft parts by 29%. Abill of $38 million jumped to $64 million.

Neither the Pentagon nor the FBI has publiclycommented on the investigation, which is likely looking into uncovering anyillegal activity that ties the head of the Huntsville office to the Russiancompanies.
