March madness in the weather

Posted: Updated:
Banner Elk, NC (WBTV) -

Terry Chapel shook his head as he looked at the snow falling in Banner Elk on Monday.

"I was playing golf yesterday in shorts and now have it snowing," he said.

Chapel said he had hoped winter was over. It's not. "Crazy country," said Terry.

The quick change in weather is something that has happened before in the high country, says Fred Pfohl, who runs a general store atop Beech Mountain.

"March is one of the times we are always fooled," he said. "One day it can be 70 and the next day winter is back."

The snow in the North Carolina Mountains comes from a system that has swept across the nation and Monday night was wreaking havoc up the Atlantic Seaboard.

Forecasters say there is a chance for more winter weather before the week ends. Ski areas report one of the best seasons they've ever had with still several more weeks to go.

As long as it stays cold off the mountain, officials believe people will be in the mood to keep skiing and resorts will stay open. For many people who have had a tough time with bitter cold temperatures this winter though, the prospect of cold weather hanging around is not one they wanted.

"I'm so ready for Spring," said Penelope Peaster.
