SHELBY COUNTY, TN -

(WMC-TV) - According to emergency authorities, you can track the worst weather damage up Highway 51 starting in Frayser, where winter weather is leaving its mark on residents.

"My lady, she woke up, and the limb was in the house," said Roosevelt Bratcher, Jr.

Bratcher and his family are leaning on the power of friends and family because they cannot live in their home, which as of Monday afternoon serves as a resting place for a massive tree.

"We just panicked. We looked through the house, and the house was a disaster," said Bratcher.

The weather's wrath in Shelby County has resulted in 48 downed trees, 36 downed power lines, 27 iced roads, and 13 flooded roads.

Shelby County's Office of Preparedness says roads and bridges from Frayser, Shelby Forrest west of Millington, and Covington in the north were the most treacherous.

With temperatures dropping Monday night, and a chance of a refreeze before Tuesday morning, Action News 5 drove into neighborhoods on less traveled roads to take a look at conditions.

"You hit an icy patch, you never know what can happen out there. People gotta be safe," warned Mid-South driver Ryan Roberts.

Icy roads and bridges, such as the Jackson Avenue overpass, are a solid sheet of ice. On Jackson Avenue near National Street, two cars slid off the road.

The latest update from Shelby County office of Preparedness warns that most roads in the Northaven area, Austin Peay Road, bridges over the Loosahatchie River, and the 6900 block of Benjestown are all iced over.

There are plenty of streets that look fine, but drivers will inevitably hit ice. If driving is unavoidable, residents are urged to use caution.

"I'm going to be in. If you ain't got no reason to be out here ... Don't be out her for real," added Daylan Cheeks.

Several areas have been closed, including Canada Road at Memphis-Arlington Road. Authorities say that road and most of the others have been open, but they ask that drivers use extreme caution, especially in light of overnight temperatures.
