The Alabama Department of Public Safety has released its crash activity report for the month of February.

The report shows that the number of victims who died in vehicle crashes where seat belts were available and not being used decreased from January.  The report, however, also shows that the number of total crash fatalities from January to February rose to 86, sixteen more victims in the same timeframe in 2013.

According to preliminary traffic crash data, in vehicle crashes that were investigated by Alabama State Troopers in February 2014, there were 43 fatalities. The number of vehicle fatalities in February 2013 was 13. Of the 43 fatalities in February 2014, 36 victims were in vehicles where seat belts were available and 22 of those victims were not wearing seat belts, down from 26 in January.

State Troopers say they are seeing far too many lives lost when something as simple as a seatbelt can prevent it.

"It only takes a second to put on your seatbelt," said Sgt. Steve Jarrett, Alabama Department of Public Safety. "But doing nothing could take your life in a second."

Data from traffic crashes investigated by state troopers indicates that over 59 percent of victims killed in 2013 were not wearing seat belts.
