ROGERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

An investigation into a former municipal court clerk charged with stealing from the city of her employ includes a four-year audit into her records.

Angie Roberson faces multiple counts of theft after investigators said she stole thousands of dollars from the City of Rogersville. She is accused of taking an estimated $67,000, and officials said that number could go higher. Robertson was released from jail on a $15,000 bond.

City officials said they never saw any red flags while Roberson worked for the city. They said the first hint of any problems showed up during an annual audit. Officials then requested further investigation and a forensics audit.

Investigators said the forensic audit dates back to 2010, but shows a bulk of the thefts occurred in recent years. City attorney Jim Stanphill said small cities like Rogersville depend on every dime to keep operations going, and something like this takes a toll on the entire community.

Rogersville is looking towards making changes to prevent something like this from happening again. "We are looking at different court computer programs that are involved; something with stricter controls that are internally built into the programs themselves," said Stanphill.

Roberson was terminated from her position in 2013 on unrelated circumstances.
