MacDougall gives his first State of the Town address

Posted: Updated:

Lexington citizens heard from their elected officials Monday night with Mayor Steve MacDougall's first State of the Town address.

Traffic is still on the forefront of issues when it comes to the town. MacDougall says for those of you who drive through the town frequently, it's common to spend hours in congestion during evening rush hour, which starts at 3 p.m. when schools are letting out.

The mayor says things should get better with construction on Columbia Avenue almost finished.

"You will see a new and improved West Butler St., Columbia Ave., Reed St., West Main St., Old Chapin Rd. and Park Rd," MacDougall said in his address.

"The town grew by 80% in the last 8 years, so that's a lot of growth at one time and that's a lot of people in the street at one time and unfortunately that's when DOT had no money and the state had no money, so we had to get creative and figure out how we were going to ease congestion," said MacDougall.

MacDougall says they are going to be working with the Transportation Department in the next month on a new system that will link traffic lights together and monitor what areas are congested to help move people through town more effectively.

"As we complete Phase I of the Unified Traffic Plan, we turn our attention to another solution to ease our traffic woes," he said. "The Adaptive Computerized Signalization System will be our newest traffic mitigation initiative...We would be the first municipality in the state to implement this new technology at all traffic signal intersections in town."
