Dangers left behind from last month's ice storm

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - The upcoming spring season is a time many homeowners will be out in their yards pruning and tidying up their flower beds, but there is something posing as a threat which could be extremely damaging if it isn't fixed hanging tree limbs.

Most of these hanging tree limbs are left behind from the two rounds of winter weather in the Grand Strand and Pee Dee.

Many tree service companies have been working around the clock to clean up debris left behind and also taking on the role of preventative maintenance.

Barbara Eisenhardt lives with her husband in the Carolina Forest area and on Monday they were getting three large trees taken down with the help of a crew with Extreme Landscaping. Eisenhardt said it took her weeks to get a tree service company to come in and assist with the clean up.

According to tree arborist Jay Harris, with Extreme Landscaping, they've been working seven days a week and 10 to 12 hour days since the storms hit. "I expect to be clearing up probably until the summer because people aren't in their yards yet."

Eisenhardt said she wanted to be proactive instead of reactive when it comes to possibly getting another taste of damaging weather. "When you think of the cost to make a repair or try to fix something, let alone the risk for health and safety. It's so much better to do it now then when your in harms away again."

Harris said with more windy weather coming this spring, hanging tree limbs could fly just about anywhere. He suggest people be careful when they're out in their yards and always be looking up for limbs to come un-lodged.

Harris said if one of these limbs fall it can be deadly. "It can break your neck, smash your skull it doesn't have to be large ever foot it falls it doubles in speed and weight."

Harris recommends when looking for a tree service company to use, to make sure they're a reputable one through the Better Business Bureau.
