BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The future of the "Good Friends Chinese and Seafood Restaurant" in Birmingham's West End is being discussed at a public hearing Monday afternoon.

The hearing began at 4 p.m. during the public safety committee meeting in the city council chambers. City leaders and citizens are talking about whether or not the restaurant should keep its business license after the owner allegedly shot at a customer last month.

Police say a woman complained about finding a roach in her egg roll and wanted a refund. They say as the woman was leaving, owner Chun Hin Ching fired shots at her. The woman wasn't hurt in the incident.

Since then, residents in the West End neighborhood have launched a protest and boycott. The owner also voluntarily closed the restaurant.

Ching was charged with attempted murder for the shooting, but has since posted bond and is out of jail. He did not attend Monday's  public hearing.

Birmingham City Councilwoman Sheila Tyson says the shooting isn't the only incident at the restaurant that has raised alarm in the community. Tyson said Ching allegedly raised a bat at customers in the past.

Birmingham police said there have been a total of 25 incidents at the restaurant, including the shooting.

FOX6 has a crew at the hearing and have an update in our evening newscasts.

    Saturday, March 25 2017 5:50 PM EDT2017-03-25 21:50:37 GMT

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
