The Tuscaloosa Metro Homicide Unit says they are investigating a fatal fire that happened Sunday.
Tuscaloosa County deputies, Tuscaloosa Fire crews and homicide unit investigators responded to 3950 Shaw Drive around 2:20 p.m. in the Holt community. A 28-year-old female, identified as Lakendel Church, was found inside the burned home after when he mother returned home from work.
Investigators believe the fire started from something cooking on the stove Saturday night and then burned out. The inside of the home is badly damaged.
Investigators say smoke spread from the kitchen to the bedroom where Church's body was discovered Sunday. Authorities are trying to understand why Church was unable to make it safely from the home when there were working fire detectors and a possible way out.
"I think our main question now is why couldn't she get out. Because she was in a bedroom, the fire was in the kitchen and she had an avenue to get out of the house," Sgt. Dale Phillips said.
The incident is under investigation by the Tuscaloosa Metro Homicide Unit and the State Fire Marshall's Office. An autopsy will be performed to determine Church's cause of death and if she had smoke in her lungs.
Church is the 40th person to die in a house fire this year in Alabama.
