BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The shooting deaths of two zebras on a Blount County farm have stirred up a tremendous amount of phone calls and interest in the community, Blount County's DA said in a press conference on Monday.

Last week, two zebras were found dead on Cindy Sherrod's family land in Oneonta on Feb. 22. Several animals, including zebras Zippy and her daughter Zena, were rescued animals.

The Sherrod family, who owned the zebras, is offering a $5,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest of the shooters.

District Attorney Pamela Casey said she believes they may be able to arrest someone in about a week or so on a misdemeanor charge. The DA doesn't think the zebra deaths are related to other animal shootings in the area, but called anyone who would shoot an animal an evil person.

"It takes an evil person to hurt a human or to hurt an animal. I just can't understand the concept of taking a firearm and shooting someone's pets, and that's what you've done here," Casey said.

The Sherrod family is posting information about the investigation on the Zippy and Zena Facebook page.
