BOONE, NC (WBTV) -

University police at Appalachian State University say a Charlotte-area student has been arrested after breaking into a dorm on campus over the weekend.

According to university officials, Alec Christopher Schemmel, a 20-year-old freshman from Mecklenburg County, was charged with one felony count of breaking and entering and one count of misdemeanor larceny.

Schemmel is accused of breaking into a dorm room in Panhellenic Hall early Sunday morning.

Officers say Schemmel pried open a window to gain entry to the room and once inside took numerous items.

The breaking and entering charge is considered a felony because it happened at night.  University police recovered property valued at $640 that was taken from the room.

Anonymous tips made to police led to Schemmel's arrest.

A $10,000 secured bond was set by the Watauga County Magistrate's Office. Schemmel's first court appearance will be Tuesday, March 4. A court date has been scheduled for April 30.
