Midfield beats Barbour County 62-40 in 3A boys

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Aaron Gaines scored 22 points and made four 3-pointers to lead Midfield to its second state championship in three years with a 62-40 victory over Barbour County Saturday in the Class 3A boys state finals.

Gaines was named tournament MVP. The Patriots (26-7) also got 15 points from Alvin Murry and 11 from Jermaine Turner. All three players were on the all-tournament team.

Murry also had 10 rebounds and Joseph Murry added nine rebounds and eight points.

Barbour County (22-12), coached by the AHSAA's winningest active boys basketball coach Raymond White, was led by Emanuel Thompson. He had 13 of his 15 points in the second half. James Grubbs added 11.

The Patriots, who won the 4A state title in 2012, outrebounded Barbour County 48-25.

Grubbs and Thompson also were all-tournament selections, along with Daniel Heard of Saks and Nathan Cothron of Madison Academy.
