DEMSI shuts down operations

DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -

DEMSI shut down operations Friday night. They had beenfacing many problems the last few months including employees walking off thejob, and filing for bankruptcy earlier in the week.

Around 5:15 p.m. Friday night, the manager of DEMSI toldemployees they were closing and ceasing operations effective immediately.

According to EMS Coordinator Ted McKelvey, he wasnotified by DEMSI about the cease of operations. DEMSI had been only staffingone ambulance for a few weeks. McKelvey alerted First Response,  the 911 operations center, and Decatur Fireand Rescue  to the situation.

McKelvey said there are no safety issues, and there wasno gap in service as there were extra ambulances in service. City officialswere notified, and discussions will be held to determine what actions wouldneed to be taken.

DEMSI had been facing many difficulties recently.Employees reportedly began walking off the job due to bouncing checks. Adiscussion was also held on revoking DEMSI's license, but the final decisionwas to be made on March 3.

Finally, DEMSI filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Wednesday.The filing stated that DEMSI had anywhere from 50-99 creditors and owedsomewhere between $1-10 million. They were scheduled to appear in FederalBankruptcy Court on the same day the decision on their license.
