HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The Huntsville City School Board called a special meeting Friday, less than 48 hours after the Department of Justice filed a scathing response in the courts to the district's re-zoning plans.

Just seconds after calling the meeting to order, the board went into executive session for about an hour. It's not clear what was discussed regarding the DOJ's response, however a resolution filed by the board regarding the common core standards was discussed.

The resolution expressed the Huntsville City School Board's opposition to Senate Bill 380, currently being discussed in the Legislature. The bill would repeal the Alabama College and Career Ready Standards, or the "Common Core" curriculum.

The Board also said it opposes any legislative initiative that would place a moratorium on the adoption of new standards or that allowed school systems to opt out of existing standards. Superintendent Dr. Casey Wardynski said a common set of standards for educators in Alabama to go by is needed. As for what was talked about in the executive session regarding the DOJ's response to the district re-zoning plans, "This is a legal matter. This is not the kind of thing you settle in the press. The DOJ tried to settle it in the press. They gave us a call and said would you like to negotiate and settle. We said hell no. It's now a matter for the courts. When you write a brief like they did, we are going to write a brief back and it's going to go to court."

That brief is due in court March 10.
