GADSDEN, Ala. (AP) - A judge is refusing to move the trial of a northeast Alabama woman charged in the running death of her 9-year-old granddaughter.
The Gadsden Times (http://bit.ly/1gGXntp) reports that a judge denied a defense request to move the upcoming trial of Joyce Garrard outside of Etowah County.
Authorities say the 48-year-old Garrard forced 9-year-old Savannah Hardin to run until the girl collapsed and later died two years ago.
Garrard says she is innocent, and many relatives are supporting her. The girl's father has sued a hospital where the child was treated after her collapse.
The defense claimed the trial should be moved away from Etowah County because of extensive publicity about the case.
The judge refused. Garrard is set to go on trial on June 23.
