ASU officials warn of scam targeting students

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Alabama State University officials are warning of a scam targeting students.

It started as a picture ad on Instagram that Alabama State University Police Chief James Graboys says is a scam.

"And they will try and contact people on Instagram and say hey, how would you like to make some extra money? Scammers will meet with that young person," Graboys said.

The chief says certain individuals are taking potential victims to places like Wal-Mart to purchase cell phones and plans in their names in exchange for some cash. It may seem like a quick way to earn some money, but the chief says there are big risks.

"You'd be able to get on that iPhone and access the account, which means you have access to all the information that I just gave the phone company," Graboys said.

The chief emphasizes no crime is being committed when you purchase a cell phone for someone, but he warns potential criminal activity could follow when strangers ask.

"My bank accounts might be at risk. My credit information might be vulnerable. My personal safety because all my information is there and who knows what you're going to do what it," Graboys said.

Plus, the phone is in your name so you are responsible for the contract, monthly charges and whatever happens to that phone.

"Don't do it. If someone says ‘hey' buy this phone for me...be like why? What's so wrong with you that you can't buy your own phone. That's my first thought that's why I knew it was a scam," ASU student Shakeria Stewart said.
