HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - Two men were rescued after being trapped 150 feet underground on Monte Sano, according to rescue workers.
Authorities said the men were sport rappelling Thursday near Panorama Drive when they got stuck on a ledge inside a natural well 225 feet deep.
Rescue crews responded around 11 a.m. after receiving a call from a third person at the site who did not get stuck. A rescuer in a harness was able to go inside the well and help retrieve the men.
Officials said they have specialized training for these emergencies and put it to good use Thursday. "The guys know what they're doing. They're pretty well versed with the rescue procedures, it's just the heaviness of the person getting them out of the hole," said Huntsville Fire & Rescue Captain Frank McKenzie.
McKenzie described the area as rough terrain. "Once you get down there, there's about a 50 foot area that we're able to work with," he said.
The men were rescued within an hour of the rescue team's arrival. No injuries were reported.
