Huntsville leaders prepare to attract BRAC projects

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Huntsville city leaders are preparing foranother round of BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure), despite push-backs fromCongress. Multiple projects in the works have been uncovered that make theRocket City a contender.

Congress does not to discuss BRAC, but multiplemedia outlets suggest Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel wants to push for aBRAC in 2017.

Huntsville city leaders said there arealready talks underway about what they need to do to make sure Redstone Arsenalis attractive to take on more projects. City Administrator John Hamilton saidthere are two specific areas they are working on: schools and infrastructure.

Hamilton said the eightroad projects Huntsville is starting are all part of a grand plan to betterset us up for a BRAC in the coming years, totaling around $250 million.

"We make the assumption that there will be aBRAC and that assumption is to drive our planning process. If there's not aBRAC, nothing really changes, but it's just making sure we're smart with ourplanning, developing the systems we need to be successful," he said.

Huntsville leaders said representatives fromall North Alabama counties and four from southern Tennessee have met to discussan upcoming BRAC.
