Hazel Green, AL (WAFF) -

Madison County Commissioners took the next step in bringing one of America's largest retailers to the county. Wednesday, the commission authorized the subdivision of land where the new Walmart Supercenter will be built in Hazel Green.

The actions taken by commissioners mean construction can get underway. While the project has brought some opposition, county leaders say the positives far outweigh the negatives.

The new Walmart will be one of a small number to be built outside the city limits. It will create 200 new jobs and allow for more economic growth opportunities.

Perhaps the aspect commissioners are most excited about is the tax revenue the big-box retailer will generate for the county's three school districts – an estimated $675,000 per year.

Wednesday, Walmart representatives made their pitch to the county commissioners, who in turn approved the breakdown of a large piece of land into several parcels.

As construction gets underway, safety issues remain of top concern for commissioners. The new store will generate a lot of extra traffic, creating new hazards for drivers. While commissioners cannot control Highway 231 because it is a state road, they are looking at what they can do to improve Charity Lane.

"I have talked to some of the landowners on the north side. Our first step is to see if we can get right-of-way to widen Charity Lane. We can widen it some to the south, but we also need to widen it to the north. If we can make Charity Lane five-lanes, it will make it a lot safer," said District 1 Commissioner Roger Jones.

Construction is expected to begin within the next few weeks, and is expected to be completed by December.
