Thieves hit Selma school, steal more than $10K worth of computers, iPads

Posted: Updated:

Thieves broke into the library at Southside High School in Selma and stole $10,000 worth of iPads and laptops early Friday morning.

The thieves committed their crimes in the middle of a thunderstorm.

"You talk about desperation. They knew they could sell those iPads for a quick buck," said school principal Clarence Jackson.

The two suspects tried to take an entire cart of iPads but ended up leaving the cart out in the soaking rain and stealing 23 iPads and three laptops. Jackson says another 20 iPads may be damaged beyond repair because of the rain.

Jackson has an idea why the criminals targeted Southside High.

"We tell the community the good things we're doing at the school and I just think they found out and took advantage of that," Jackson said.

Jackson says he is certain this was not an inside job. The suspects appear to be grown men in the surveillance video.

High school senior Jamarrious Brown says what really bothered him was so many of his classmates don't have computers at home.

"This is our school and we take pride in it. We just got the grant two years ago for the iPads and for them to do this was petty," Brown said.

The school reportedly has insurance to cover the loss.
