BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Robert and Janice Morris enjoy a simple life in rural Alabama. When it comes to how they decorate their home, they like to keep things interesting.

40 years ago the Morris' came across this clay jug at a junk store in Fayetteville in Talladega County. It was a must-buy, for Robert at least. $12 later, Robert was the proud owner of the 5 gallon jug.

For years, it was just another decoration in the Morris home. A few months ago, Robert decided to give it to his granddaughter, but shared an interesting hunch he had about the jar.

"It's folk art. It just had the look to me like it might be worth something," said Robert

His granddaughter did a little online research and, it turns out, Robert was on to something. The clay jar dates back to the 1800s. It was created by the German immigrant artist John Lemham, who lived in Randolph County. Others like it had sold for tens of thousands of dollars. Robert made some calls to appraisers.

"They were saying it was very valuable. Very rare."

Robert made a decent profit on his $12 purchase some 40 years ago. According to the Daily Home, Morris got $100,000 from the Birmingham Museum of Art for the jug. The museum is making repairs to the jug and will have it on display in a few weeks.

Robert Morris says he is using some of that "jug money" to help his grand kids pay for college.
