HUNSTVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The number of hate groups in America has fallen for the first time in nearly a decade, according to a recent report released by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Although that seems promising, the SPLC goes on to say that there are still more than 2,000 hate groups across the country.

The SPLC found that hate groups dropped by about 7% over the past year. In 2012, there were 1,007 groups. In 2013, there were 939. The organization says that the most significant decrease was among the antigovernment "Patriot" movement. Those groups fell about 19%.

The SPLC currently recognizes 22 organizations as hate groups in the state. Six of those are in North Alabama. They are: Confederate Hammerskins - Racist Skinhead in Huntsville, Council of Conservative Citizens - White Nationalist out of Cullman, Council of Conservative Citizens - White Nationalist out of Florence, Crew 38 - Racist Skinhead in Huntsville, League of the South - Neo-Confederate out of Killen, and the North Mississippi White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan out of Red Bay.
