Doctors warn against retail-based clinics when kids are sick

HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

Many families now turn to retail-based health clinics at stores such as CVS and Walgreens, but a leading medical society is urging parents to think twice.

The American Academy of Pediatrics, which is the nations largest group of pediatricians, were advising people to steer clear of these clinics.

With the popularity of them growing, many people are going because it may be more convenient, no appointments are needed and in some cases, it's even cheaper.

In the last few years, the number of patients seen at clinics at such as CVS and Walgreens have gone up about 20 percent.

Pediatricians said these clinics should not be used as your child's primary source of health care. Instead, they should only be used to fill in gaps when your pediatrician is not available.

They advise parents to use a trusted pediatrician as often as possible, citing most of these clinics are run by nurse practioners who don't typically work with your child's doctor.

Eyewitness News caught up with a few moms Monday, and the ones we spoke to agree with these recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics.

"I'll probably do it for myself because I'm in charge of my well-being, but for my child, I'd use a pediatrician," one mother said.

"We've been without pediatricians all of our children's lives. They know the history. It's in depth instead of going for the first time," another mother said.

The most common reasons for visits to these clinics are sore throats, ear infections and colds or flu.
