Bartels pleads guilty to child sex abuse charges before trial can start

A Montgomery man's high profile child sex abuse trial, withsome two dozen witnesses subpoenaed to testify, was scheduled to begin Monday,but WSFA 12 News has learned the defendant has pleaded guilty.

Montgomery County Deputy District Attorney Seth Gowanconfirms Andrew "Andy" Bartels pleaded guilty to two counts of first degree sexabuse, class "C" felonies.  Bartels was indicted on 3 counts of sex abuseof a child, less than 12-years-old in March of 2013. 

At the time of Bartel's arrest in the fall of 2012, FrazerMemorial United Methodist Church issued this statement to WSFA 12 News:

"Thistragedy is made even deeper by the possibility that the alleged victim orvictims may have been the children of other Frazer families who the accusedknew through church". 

Bartels will serve a split sentence.

While the judgesentenced Bartels to 10 years, after 3 years the judge could allow him tobegin 3 years of supervised probation. 

If probation is violated, Bartelswould likely be forced to serve the remainder of his sentence. 

Regardless, Bartels will be forced to register as a sex offender for theremainder of his life. 

Gowan confirmed the victim's family agreed theplea deal.

Bartels is scheduled to report on March 7th.
