Officials estimate 12K Bassmaster attendance

GUNTERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Area tourism officials call this weekend'sBassmaster Classic in Guntersville a huge success after the release of initialattendance numbers.

Officials estimate nearly 12,000 peopleattended the launches over the tournament's three-day schedule. It is said thatnumber is more than any other in Bassmaster launch history.

The event started with large gatherings towatch the 55 competing anglers take off at 7 a.m. Friday through Sunday.Tourism officials said they are now beginning the process of determining theimpact of the event on the area.

Visitors Bureau Executive Director KatyNorton said they expect to have lodging numbers by the end of the week, butthey are expected to be high. Norton said this is traditionally a slow month inthe area, but the Classic is expected to change that for this year.

City officials also look forward to gettingsales tax figures, but those reports are not expected for another four to eightweeks.

    An incarcerated Lawrence County man who walked off a work detail earlier this month has been captured in Colorado.  The Pueblo County Sheriff's Office reportedly took Austen Larry Williams, 28, into custody on Saturday.
