For some people, every night is a struggle to get to sleep and stay asleep for a few hours. Sound like you? Well, there are several reasons that you could be missing out on some z's.
Some things like a poor diet, you shouldn't have sweets too close to bedtime, and stay away from drinks. Drinks may cause you to have to get up in the middle of the night for a trip to the bathroom. Also not enough exercise your body needs that to promote healthy rest.
Stress, both physical and mental, can also keep you up at night and your environment is very important. You need to kill those bright lights and reduce the noise a few minutes before bedtime.
Another common reason you might not be getting enough rest is poor sleep hygiene! Dr. Williams with the sleep center says , "People just don't get enough sleep. They don't go to bed at the same time every night. They try to stay up on weekends. That can affect your sleep on an everyday basis."
More and more people are finding that their problem is actually an undiagnosed sleep disorder. Patrick woods was snoring and would stop breathing through the night. Concerned for his health, he underwent a sleep study.
"It was quickly confirmed in my instance. They stopped about 1:30 and told me that there was no reason to complete the study, that I was a 12 on a scale of 15 and I had a severe case of sleep apnea" says Patrick Woods.
Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder that occurs when a person's breathing is interrupted during sleep. People with untreated sleep apnea stop breathing repeatedly during their sleep, sometimes hundreds of times. This means the brain and the rest of the body may not get enough oxygen. Sleep apnea patient Jonathan Aplin suffered with it for years and so did his wife
Aplin says "I would get 8-10 hours a night. I'd have great sleep but I'd wake up the next morning feeling like I had partied all night. And the fact that my wife was very irritated because I snored most of the night and it was so loud she would wake up continuously throughout the night."
Both Woods and Aplin are getting treatment now and they say the change for the better was immediate.
So you can see why it's so important to get sleep... And get help if you have a problem with restless nights. There are other things you can try to help you sleep:
be active during the day- get at least 60 minutes of exercise a day but not too close to bedtime.
Avoid alcohol and drugs-some people think these things relax you but that's not the case.
Turn off the TV-v and the cell phone.
Keep a sleep routine... Try to go to bed at the same time very night.
Remember if those things don't work seek treatment immediately it could help you get a better night's sleep.
