Henrico mom claims excessive force after 11-year-old arrested at school

An Henrico mother is outraged after her 11-year-old daughter was arrested at Tuckahoe Middle School. Mom calls it excessive, but police say the student was screaming and refusing to follow orders.

"It's too much," said concerned mother Karen Gross. "It's just too extreme."

Gross is upset to learn that a case of her daughter, Kameron, acting out in class ended with Kameron being arrested.

"I think it was excessive force and completely uncalled for," said Gross. "Are you kidding me?"

Kameron said she left the classroom and started walking towards the principal's office. The student says an administrator came and put his hand on her shoulder. She says she reached down to push it away.

"The School Resource Officer observed the interaction and saw the female screaming at the administrator and refusing to walk to the office," said Henrico Police in a statement to NBC12. "Once the student did walk to the office, her behavior became increasingly aggressive towards the administrator."

The student was ultimately charged with disorderly conduct.

"I don't know why he would handcuff me," said Kameron. "He's saying I could have hurt (the administrator) or he thought I would hurt him. How could I hurt him? I mean he is big, and I'm small."

Mom wants the charges dismissed.

"I do not want this to go on her permanent record," said Gross. "I do not think that it's fair."

Mom notes her daughter was also suspended for three days. She is not challenging the suspension.

"No," said Gross. "Kameron was in no way shape or form a complete angel in this instance."

Henrico School officials would not comment because of privacy concerns.
