ETOWAH COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

Savannah Hardin's father has filed a malpractice lawsuit against Gadsden Regional Medical Center, alleging the hospital failed to properly treat his nine-year-old daughter when she was admitted two years ago.

Hardin was brought to GRMC on Feb. 17, 2012 after her grandmother and stepmother allegedly forced her to run for three hours and carry wood as punishment for eating a candy bar. Her mother, Jessica Hardin, called 911 after the little girl started having seizures and was unresponsive.

In the lawsuit, Robert Hardin claims GRMC failed to properly treat Savannah for her dangerously low sodium levels. He also says the hospital did not transport her to Children's of Alabama Hospital soon enough.

The suit, filed this week in Etowah County Circuit Court, cites 22 different counts of negligence. Hardin alleges that the hospital's actions led to his daughter's death at Children's on Monday, Feb. 20. Children's of Alabama is not mentioned in the lawsuit.

FOX6 News has reached out to officials at GRMC for comment, but so far they have not responded.

Jessica Hardin faces a murder charge in her stepdaughter's death. Joyce Garrard, Savannah's grandmother, is charged with capital murder and is awaiting a June 4 trial.
