Overturned 18-wheeler slows I-40 traffic west of Asheville

CLYDE, NC (FOX Carolina) -

An overturned tractor-trailer that shut down the eastbound lanes of Interstate 40 in Haywood County is still causing delays.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation said the accident happened at mile marker 17 between the Tennessee state line and Clyde.

As of 9:20 a.m., the right lane was still blocked. DOT reported the lane may not reopen until 5 p.m.

A detour is in place for traffic headed east. Drivers from Tennessee can follow Interstate 81 north from the I-40/I-81 split until they reach Interstate 26 near Johnson City. Then they can take exit 57-A for I-26 east and stay on it until reaching Interstate 240 in Asheville.

Once there, drivers can take the I-240 east exit, then use exit 8 to get back onto I-40 east at exit 53.

NCDOT said the road would reopen later in the morning.
