Families want closure in officer-involved crash that killed two women

Posted: Updated:

The families of Shelly Amos and Cheryl Burton came together in Decatur to push for closure. The former police officer involved in their deadly traffic crash has yet to go on trial.

"Very frustrating, this is the only thing we can do is reach out," said Devron Cunningham, Amos' son.

The three-year anniversary of the women's deaths was February 19. The families gathered at the crash site for a vigil.

"Holding on waiting for just answers and closure and an apology," said Monique Blount, Burton's niece.

The women were driving through the intersection of Covington Highway and Kensington Road when a then DeKalb County police officer struck them. The friend's car ended up wrapped around an electrical pole.

Kristina Hambie was the DeKalb County police officer driving the cruiser. She was on duty, but heading to lunch. Her lights and sirens were off. Prosecutors say she was driving 30 miles over the 35 mph speed limit.

Hambie was fired from her job as a police officer.

Five months ago, Hambie was arraigned and entered a not guilty plea to the charges including two counts of vehicular homicide. Her attorney said it was an accident.

The criminal case is in DeKalb County Superior Court and the families are hopeful the trial will be scheduled for the spring.

"I understand it takes time to prepare things for the case, but I think it's ridiculous it's taken three years," said Desmund Nicely, Burton's son

DeKalb County settled a civil lawsuit with both families.
