AMBER Alert from Orange Co. provides first use of wireless alert system

Posted: Updated:
ORANGE, VA (WWBT) -

An AMBER Alert issued out of Orange County Wednesday provided the first use in Virginia of a FEMA wireless alert program.

You've been able to get the AMBER Alerts on your phones for years if you opted in, but just in the last year did the program change so you have to opt out.

The program operates through a partnership between wireless providers, the FCC and FEMA. It helps this critical information reach millions.

The system also works for weather alerts, but if you don't want them you can turn either off in your phone settings.
