Meals tax revenue will fund major Henrico school renovations

Posted: Updated:
HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

On Wednesday, the Henrico School Board got a rough draft of an amended Capital Improvement Plan which shows how the meals tax revenue could pay for projects across the county.

Bathroom and parking upgrades, even fixing lighting at some schools are just some of the major projects.

The biggest right now is a $2.2 million renovation project for Tuckahoe Elementary School. If all goes as planned, these projects could start next school year.

The long list of repairs, replacements and upgrades needed at more than two dozen Henrico County public schools could soon be checked off. Administrators say that's all thanks to the revenue they expect to receive from the new meals tax.

An amended capital improvement plan was released showing how much money specific schools could be receiving. These projects specifically deal with the campus' infrastructure and renovations.

Some of the bigger items include: $600,000 at Hermitage for bathroom and lighting upgrades, $565,000 at Fairfield Middle School for work on the parking lot and kitchen, $375,000 at Montrose to replace the ceiling and lighting and $325,000 at Holladay for bathroom and kitchen work.

Administrators say some schools have waited years for these much needed improvements.

$18 million in revenue is expected to be generated by the meals tax. Half of that will go towards the projects talked about in the Capital Improvement Plan, the other half is expected to go towards the operating budget.

The tax is expected to go into effect later this year.
