Investigators have developed new leads in a murder case that is almost a decade old. In 2004, 27-year-old Russell Franklin was found dead in his car with a single gunshot wound to his chest.
Detectives with the Hanover County Sheriff's Office are now saying that Franklin met the suspect or suspects in the parking lot of a Mechanicsville daycare center in the early morning hours of August 14, 2004.
"A confrontation of some sort occurred and he probably was trying to flee the area," said Lt. Chris Whitley. "Then, two shots were fired by the suspect."
Franklin's 1995 light blue Cadillac ran off the road and hit a fence on Old Hickory Drive at Route 360. A deputy found Franklin was dead in his driver's seat.
The person responsible has eluded police for a decade but investigators say, they've developed new information in the case including two significant leads.
"There are still several individuals within the metro-Richmond area who haven't come forward that can help solve the case," said Lt. Whitley.
Police wouldn't elaborate but point to Franklin's son. Chance Franklin was only eight years old when his dad died.
"Mr. Franklin was a father, husband a son. He's not just a statistic," said Lt. Whitley. "For those who have information, hopefully over the last ten years, maybe their lives have changed. Maybe this has been a burden to them and now they feel more comfortable coming forward in this case to help us solve it."
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Hanover County Sheriff's Office at (804) 365-6140 or the Metro Richmond Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000. Citizens can also text Crime Stoppers at 274637 (CRIMES), using the keyword "iTip" followed by their tip. Both Crime Stoppers methods are anonymous.
